(return to part 2)

How do you reconcile being a single mom with the kind of traveling you have to do to sustain a career in music?

It's difficult. My mother helps me a lot; she lives with me, so thank god for that.

It's definitely been an issue. I used to drag my kids around with me on the road, and some people would be like, "Oh my god!" But my son's now in high school and an honor student and an athlete - he's the perfect teen-age guy - so it didn't seem to affect him in any way.

But it's hard. I just always wanted a family and a career, and I didn't want to sacrifice one for the other. So far [the kids] have done OK with it. My son's really busy these days so he doesn't want to have anything to do with it anymore, but my daughter still thinks it's great. She likes going to hotels, and she likes room service and going to the pool. She's a diva anyway. She'll be the show-business girl.
